Archive for August, 2003

Had a long lunch with some JC classmates at the Science canteen yesterday. Since some of them had classes to rush to, I ended up chattering with Minwei, Lijie and shmeen at a table. I do miss the 01s77 feeling. Even though shmeen and Minwei are in medicine too, I don’t really talk to them at all.

My Ipoh relatives are coming over tonight for a short visit ‘cos it’s Malaysia’s National Day tomorrow. They consist of Father’s younger brother, his wife, and their two children – a girl 1 year older than myself, and a boy 1 year older than my brother. I kinda miss Chinese New Year where everyone would gather in Singapore for a few days of lunch at various hotel restaurants and dinner at various homes. After my grandmother (stationed in Singapore) passed away the Ipoh relatives just decided to use the long CNY holiday to vacation in places like Sydney and Perth. So now they come over around 31st August! I’ll be glad to see them, but it’s rather disruptive. My mother was silently cursing them last year ‘cos I had prelims, and this year my brother is having prelims ^^;; And there’s no holiday mood… But I’m still happy that I’ll get to see my cousins, though it’s getting harder to talk to them these days; I don’t know what to talk about! And I don’t like it when people force me to eat.

I have finally, finally gotten connected to the NUS wireless network! I’m typing this on my laptop in the library right now. It’s quite simple, actually!

1. Email the Computer Centre people and tell them your name, contact no., faculty, year and user id.

2. Give them the physical address of your wireless card.

3. After they register your card, just add a new network and call the SSID “NUS”. Disable WEP. Tada!

*beams*

Saw rojak yesterday at the Central Forum selling stuff for the Temasek Hall bazaar. I haven’t seen her since we went out for KTV weeks before university started. There are bazaars all over NUS almost every day; but the good thing about them is that they get Milo vans to come ^_^_^_^_^

Is it just me, or have people lost all sense of etiquette these days? People just can’t stop talking during lectures. It’s not even that they’re clarifying something about the lecture with their friends. Once the lecturer finishes the important content portion of his lecture and starts on a summary the noise level just rises. Or if the lecturer isn’t an entertaining one they find other means of entertainment. People just seem to think that they can forget that they’re part of an audience once they don’t feel like being the audience. It’s really terrible. If you don’t want to listen, fine. That doesn’t equate to behaving like the lecturer doesn’t exist. Why can’t you just find something else to do, like read a book or hammer away on a laptop? In JC the teachers would have screamed at us; here the professors either feel too embarrassed to do so, or are too used to it. I don’t know. Are all university students like that? Or is this just characteristic of M1s? Being unable to get out of the holiday mood after 7 months of break is no excuse at all.

The 2nd prossection session today. This time I slipped my Nomad II MG into the breast pocket of my labcoat and recorded everything that Prof Tay said. The sound quality’s not bad; I love my Nomad! One guy in my group commented on how the cadaver looked like duck meat, which started the two of us waxing lyrical about this duck rice stall in Pasir Panjang. It’s really scrumptious. All you have to do to get there is just go along the winding road past PGP for some distance till you see a small row of shops. The famed duck rice stall is the one at the end nearest to you. Aaah…heavenly :)

My family went browsing at a furniture showcase after dinner today. I saw this irresistable chair: it looks like a bass cleft, where the curvy portion is like an armchair, and the big blob is an integrated little table! Simply perfect for reading or laptop work. Thing is, it cost $500+ *ouch* Sigh.

Was reading through blogs; haven’t had the luxury of doing that for a long while. My poor juniors are so stressed up right now because of prelims. One funny thing this year: how come no one really mentioned Matsuri on any of the mailing lists? I didn’t even know that there was one till the day itself (yesterday), and only then because Alanna told me she couldn’t watch movie as she was going for it. Heh… I think mailing lists are breaking down recently. My OG’s one is almost extinct right now ^^;

To SteJuste: too bad about your quiz results ^^;;; I think my Legolas result looks really good. Way better than rie’s raunchy one that she got on her nth try.

To khayman: may I know your identity, please ?*smile smile*

Had a really ridiculous, yet rather frightening dream that lasted so long my body clock failed and I woke up one hour later than usual! First of all there were some activities going on in the medicine faculty, where various groups had to come with elaborate headpieces for a representative. This was held at my house! And later those representatives had to choose matching costumes from big bags of clothes, which the seniors dragged out from my kitchen cabinets. Somehow the kitchen was joined to an arcade-like place.

Suddenly the scene changed, and the M2 senior in charge told us that we were going to war. The scene changed to some big house where the bottom floor had plain white tiling, the central stairway was wide and elegant ala those in hotels, and the upper rooms had weapons. The M2 handed out licenses for war to us! A4 grey pieces of paper with flowery border and calligraphic script. We were then supposed to choose weapons. Alanna, Bianca, and Pei Wen were also there even though they’re not in medicine. Alanna was prettily made up and moaning that she really didn’t want to go fight in the war because she was meeting someone later. I couldn’t decide between a sword or a bow/crossbow. In the end I settled on a crossbow, then realised that there were no arrows around, just bags of black feathers. So I stuffed a crossbow, longbow and feathers into my PE shorts and grabbed a spear.

After everyone got weapons we went down to some central admin building, which had the same layout as YIH, only with classier wood panelling and carpeting. There we lined up to show our licenses to some guy at a table, who really looked like one of my medicine interviewers. I didn’t bring mine ‘cos I didn’t want to fight holding a cumbersome piece of paper, so he glared and lectured me on printing costs. (??) Everyone who showed him the licence got some acknowledgement form in return, and could choose from two thick leather-bound books: “The Queen: Short Stories” and “Ghost Stories of Singapore”. The former was a collection of anecdotes written by SM Lee’s wife O.O Well, I didn’t get the book ‘cos I didn’t bring my licence.

After that everyone went into some kind of waiting room, then proceeded down the hill to meet our opponents, seemingly

The Gallbladders played at Far East Plaza as part of the Tapestry 2003 lineup today. At the foot of the escalator opposite Burger King in the humid heat, no less – argh! I was one of three staunch supporters ^^;; Sadly, the Gallbladders are down to 2 original founding members as dear Joyce is overseas and Diana is don’tknowwhere. So they got last-minute guitarist and bassist people to join. They sounded much better than before ‘cos the technical aspect has improved. Now Quanyi sings and plays guitar simultaneously leh :) It was great hearing all those songs again and exchanging meaningful glances with Quanyi whenever she introduced a song. “And this is the Clark Kent song! *shoot glance shoot glance* ” Once again I realise that the bass part does play a huge part in how the song eventually sounds; most of it sounds a bit different this time ‘cos the guest bassist came up with his own parts after learning the chords last-minute. They remastered and remade “Stupid Porridge Girl” – now it’s even more “What-?”-inducing. They didn’t get to play “Hark” ‘cos of time constraints, which was sheer injustice. “Hark” is one of my favourites *sniff* Once the Gallbladders finally cut a CD I will buy it. Many copies. One for my room, one for my brother’s room, one for each car… …

Had a rather frustrating time this afternoon. For the first time in my life I actually felt a burning desire to step into a cinema and watch a movie. Was supposed to watch LXG with my OG but those idiots slowly pulled out one by one. Argh. And then I wanted to watch A Tale of Two Sisters but no one wanted to watch it with me because it’s a horror flick, or because it’s Korean. No way was I going to watch it alone, so ARGH ARGH ARGH!!!!!!!! *sob* I wanted to watch it for the cinematography.

What am I supposed to write on my lecture notes and papers now? It somehow feels incomplete just writing my name and the date. Do I write “PBL Group 5″, “Anatomy Group 4″, “OG Maedhros” or “M1″? It feels weird not to have a class to belong to. These days my OG is still together and hanging out for library outings and lunch. We chope seats for one another in the LT, but sometimes we don’t manage to get enough. (What’s with all those people crashing medicine lectures anyway? Grr.) We happily photostat notes for one another: Who wants a copy? Raise your hands! *counts* … I’ve heard that certain other people have already started withholding notes ‘cos they want to get onto Dean’s List and earn more accolades. I haven’t really got to know more people besides the three groups I just mentioned. If anything, I’m just talking more to ex-secondary schoolmates or ex-JC schoolmates that I didn’t really know before. Met a rather cool girl during first aid today, though. For the 3rd time in 7 days I’ve been asked if I’m local, apparently because I don’t speak like one. ?????
