This is in reply to stone’s oct 17 blog entry. They asked me at the medicine interview whether I thought that doctors could cure everything. A simple yes/no/sometimes question, but I suddenly realised that I didn’t know the meaning of the word ‘cure’. I didn’t answer for a long time ‘cos I was trying to organise my thoughts and rethink what I’ve been thinking the whole of my life. I started many sentences, and the interviewer actually said, “Okay, let’s make this easy. All of the time, only sometimes, or never?” I said “Only sometimes” in relief. (okay, story time over)
Medicine so far is mostly trying to allow the patient to lead a normal life to the greatest extent possible. It doesn’t really return one’s body back to the equilibrium – the natural, ‘meant-to-be’ state. I strongly believe that the body has unlimited rejuvenative capacity, and the key to medicine should lie in triggering the ‘on’ button for that. I still think that medicine is wonderful because it showcases how humans are determined to make the best of everything, even if they can’t solve the root of the problem.
The natural cycle of things: give the body what it’s meant to be given, and the body will be as it is meant to be. Upset the cycle, and you get sick. The body can right things, but you have to get it to.
Yup, I think that’s what I meant to say.
I think that’s really hard ^^;; Probably just a daydream for now. I’m sure lots of people have already thought of this and tried to research it, but maybe the means doesn’t lie in life sciences. Maybe there’s more to life than just genes, and that will be the key.
